WASECA, Minn. — Boyd Fuller has received the Personal Service Award from the University of Minnesota, Waseca and Southern School of Agriculture Alumni Association. The association also gave its Minnesota Ag Award to Harlan Holmquist, the retired executive director of Farmamerica.
Fuller and Homlquist will be honored Aug. 16 at 1 p.m. during a ceremony on the Farmamerca grounds in Waseca.
I spent last weekend in Waseca with my WHS59 classmates celebrating our 50 year reunion. Many of us arrived on Friday and lunched and socialized at the Boat House in the afternoon and had dinner at the Starfire Grill at the Miller Armstrong Building.
Saturday we again met at the Boat House for lunch. Early in the afternoon classmate Sharon Connolley Batt mustered a crew to create floral bouquets for the tables from flowers she donated. Later in the afternoon, Supt. Rottke led our classmates on a tour through Central School where he gave us souvenir pieces of the stair railing. Following the tour, we met up with Mrs. Elaine Fox (nee Biese), our kindergarten teacher, and had our photo taken on the steps of the main entrance. The photo replicated our 1947 kindergarten graduation photo.
Saturday evening we had our reunion dinner at the Miller Armstrong banquet room on 3rd floor. (I’d highly recommend the facility for smallish reunions and other events.) Forty-three classmates of our 66 living classmates attended, plus many spouses and companions. Mr. and Mrs. Jim and Elaine Fox were honored guests. Dick Sommerstad, class vice president, was master of ceremonies and speakers included Bruce Dowlin, class president; Larry Olson, class speaker; Knut Gerlach, our German foreign exchange student and the first AFS student at Waseca High School. Mrs. Fox spoke and distributed our Kindergarten Graduation Program to kindergarten graduates.
Sunday morning we met for brunch at the Starfire Grill before parting company. It was great to see all my classmates.
I’ll be traveling to Waseca on Friday to attend my Waseca Central High School Class of 1959 50 Year Reunion. I’m looking forward to seeing and visiting with my classmates again.
One of the highlights of the All-School Reunion weekend for me was the Trowbridge Park Reunion. The reunion was the brain-child of Judy Loomer Giese and anyone who considered themselves part of the Trowbridge Park neighborhood was invited.

You might remember The Willows under one of its former names, Jerry’s Inn, Fox Inn or Horn Inn. I remember my family going there in the 1950s occasionally for special occasions.
The owners, Jim and Beth Blake, were the owners and operators of the Boat House Restaurant in Waseca for 15 years. Their son Travis will help operate the restaurant.
Blake classifies his restaurant as upscale, family dining. The menu offers choices of steak, ribs, pasta, seafood, wraps, sandwiches, a salad bar, a wide assortment of appetizers, burgers, beer and wine by the glass or bottle.

The passing of Russ Clayton this week reminds me of why homecoming and reunions are important – we never know if we’re going to be able to make it to the next one and there are people we’d like to see again.
The Waseca High School class of 1957 is holding their 50th reunion this weekend in conjunction with homecoming. There are plans to honor the 1957 football team at halftime of the homecoming game with St. Peter. I understand it’s a rather new tradition to invite the class of 50 years ago to be honored during homecoming. I think it’s a good tradition, and I hope they take a little time to remember Russ.
The Waseca 2008 All-School Reunion Committee meets every 3rd Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Trainor Campion Center (old school) meeting room (use west door). The next meeting is Monday, July 16. Alumni are still needed to help plan this event. The reunion is scheduled for Friday – Sunday, July 4, 5, and 6, 2008. The 1937 graduating classes of Sacred Heart High School and Waseca High School will hold their 70th Reunion at noon on Saturday, June 9, 2007, at the Happy Chef Restaurant, Waseca.
The reunion will continue on Sunday, June 10, with an 11 a.m. brunch hosted by Harold and Elsie Jorgensen Frentz at the Happy Chef Restaurant.
Helen Gallagher Fowler told me that the reason they hold their reunions at noon is that so many of the classmates can’t drive after dark. Fowler said they expect about 40 people to attend the reunion.
The Southern School of Agriculture (SSA), Waseca, Class of 1967 is planning a 40th Reunion for Saturday, August 25, at the Elks Club in Faribault, MN.
The reunion committee is headed by Lowell Walburn (507-333-2948). Also assisting is Aldon Sammon (507-334-6832). Contact them for information.
